Present Snobbery

So here’s my dilemma: My mum has expressed a preference for a Katie Melua CD for Christmas, and Dad wants the Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb one.

I have refused on the following grounds: Katie Melua is rubbish. Although I have less objection to dad’s choice, 21st Century Barbara Streisand has no place in a record collection as prized as my dads (including rare Billy Fury 7″s, Motwown, all things Beatles & Stones etc). Mainly, though, because I’m a SNOB and don’t want to be adding to the saled numbers of either of them.

Am I wrong?

  • No, not as long as you can think of something else to buy instead!

  • You wouldn’t be the first to refuse to buy a present for the person’s own good ;-)

  • I so wouldn’t buy anyone a Katie Melua CD. She is, indeed, shitonastick.

Both your folks need to be introduced to the sonic delights of some solo bass loveliness, fo shizzle, :D

well, now they’ve been named and shamed…..stick to your guns girl, they’re your parents, they need guidance and protection. 1970s streisand maybe but new? no, they simply shouldn’t have it.

i will confess to having a bot of a soft spot for the Guilty album – but the follow up that has just been released is so bad – it could have been so good – (insert long conversation about stars who end up with too much time and money and surround themselves with people who ‘yes you are brilliant and the album is brilliant’ rather than ‘with all due respect Ms Streisand the album is a pile of poo and oyu really need to do it all again’)

Maureen Lipman tells a story how she met Ms Streisand with her two kids when her husband was writing a movie with her – Ms Streisand played them her just recorded version of Memory from Cats – Mureen Lipmans son when asked what he thought said ‘it’s a bit loud’ – out of the mouths of babes :)

IF you do buy it be careful where you buy it from. Don’t go where they know you (obviously) but beware of an electronic trail. Don’t use a loyalty card or credit card and don’t buy online.

Having bought Aled Jones for my mum-in-law 2 years ago I still get spam for every Aled, choir boy or welsh choir CD ever released. Who wants that in their inbox?
