Proper Peel

Radio 1 marks the first anniversary of John Peel’s final broadcast with an evening of retrospective programmes, and nearly 300 gigs across the country featuring mainly new bands, Peel’s lifeblood.
The galleries on the R1 site are incredible and well worth a look. Not just pictures of last night, but from his entire career.

this is Venetian Snares, the techno hero who played last night. The whole night was one big highlight, but only his set left us feeling both uplifted and like we’d been assaulted at the same time.
So good to see many of my most missed R1 people too… Louise and Stuart (of course), Alice and T, Annie and Rob, Russel, Tash, Zoe, and – my favourite celebrity blog reader and young keeper of the flame – Huw Stephens.
Lammo’s on from 9 tonight, back doing the double with Jo Whiley, then Annie & Rob Da Bank will have highlights from last night from 11. LISTEN!

And obviously the only place to celebrate Peel Day properly is at Darbucka in Clerkenwell – Rise Kagona from the Bhundu Boys, Steve Lawson and Calamateur – a finer bill than you’ll find anywhere else in London this evening.

It was great listening to R1 tonight on my way from doing a tiny gig in Birmingham, and hearing all the fantastic music in honour of John Peel… Venetian Snares especially sounded ace. Must have been amazing to have been there
Incredible stuff.
