Gateway To The South

After yesterday’s anxieties, today turned into a good day. It was frantic at first, and the show had started with me still writing half of it, but I don’t think we’ve ever had so many emails and texts, and the energy carried us through. Steve was also weraing a really nice jumper – which somehow helped.

I also exchanged a couple of emails with the ever-lovely Denison Witmer who’s going to send me some copies of his new album. I’m chomping at the bit to hear it… and to get him back in the country to talk nonsense and drink smoothies and generally hang out. Hoorah!

Tonight I accompanied Mr H to The Bedford in Balham to see a few bands.

Two singer songwriters with staggering voices, and a danish band who play very well but need a little help with their lyrics.

The last guy on, called Vijay, sounded so like Jeff Buckly at times that it was disconcerting – particularly when this voice is coming out of a cute asian brummie. Hayley, the opener, shows real promise… I was listening wracking my brains as to who she reminded me of and it was Tony, the club host, who managed to nail it; She’s got a touch of the Cathy Burton. Not a bad thing!

If you’re a London type and you’ve never been down there… Go! It’s such a great venue, and I’m yet to have a shabby evening.

What exactly is a London type? Whatever the definition, I second the “get down there if you haven’t already” notion.

Is Tony still doing the “Bedford/Kashmir stadium” gag?

  • A London Type is one who lives close enough to London to be able to get to Balham without upsetting themselves.

And I don’t think I’ve heard that one… but I’ve heard several others more times than I care to remember!
