6 times a year

As Blur said “Bank Holidays come 6 times a year, days of enjoyment where everyone cheers, Bank Holidays come with 6 packs of beer, then it’s back to work a.g… a.i.n!”

I was at work today, but we had a ’show meeting’ sat outside an italian restaurant with a beer in our hands to make it feel a bit more like we were on holiday somewhere. I also worked yesterday – but it really didn’t feel like it. I went to Cambridge to interview this band Miss Black America who were firm fravourites of John Peel (probably ’cause they’re from Suffolk), and are opening up our Lamacq In the City gig on Wednesday.

My ‘work’ with them was to go to three different pubs and have a trip to a funfair, where we rode on one of the most horrific/nauseating/brilliant rides I’ve ever been on. Why did we do it? Because it had a bad picture of Jimi Hendrix next to the ticket booth and we felt it was a ’sign’.

After I’d wrung the band dry of wit and wisdom about Cambridge I went for tea and some time with my nieces. It was Tansy’s 3rd Birthday on Saturday so there were presents to be given and (gratifyingly) played with immediately. Baby croquet was good and didn’t get as far as learing how to hit each other with the plastic mallets, and the plastic egg-and-spoon race was better than I’d hoped. The Fuzzy Felt Princesses (from aunty Cath) were saved till after bath time, and got very silly indeed.

I know I’m biased, but they really are fantastically beautiful. Libby is fair and blue-eyed, and Tansy dark with hazel eyes. When they look at me I would do anything for them. They’re totally two of the most important things in my life. I should see them more. In fact, I’m going back tomorrow night – if I can get everything done at work in time, and they’re looking forward to waking me up by jumping on me on Wednesday morning.

In which case I should get as much sleep as possible now…

Miss Black America! Now there’s a name I’ve not heard in a while. I got sent a CD of theirs a few years ago when I used to write for the NUS. “Talk Hard” was the single. I didn’t love it, are they any good now?

Baby Croquet? But how do the babies fit through the hoops?

    Enquiring minds and all that…

  • Helloooo! I heard your brief interview from Cambridge on Jane’s show earlier.. What you said about the Junction was so apt. I remember it when it really wasn’t much more than car park and shed… albeit a shed painted very black on the inside! Good to hear thta they have renovated it just a bit…
