listening
I’m spending the morning trying to make a large dent in that stack of cds that are pictured a few posts down…
So far there’s been a couple of dissappointments (new Paul Weller Single and a lot of bland rock) but some real delights.
Carli Bruni, yes that French supermodel, has done a few songs in her native tongue, Quelqu’un m’a dit and le plus beau du quartier, and they are the sexiest things I’ve heard for ages. Breathy French singing in the style of je t’aime, but with more tune. It made me walk round the office asking if anyone had heard it…
Then there’s another set of French ladies, Nouvelle Vague, who’ve done french, easy-listening style cover-versions of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart and Depeche Mode’s I Just Can’t Get Enough. AND THEY WORK!
Also enjoyable is a lesbian thecho outfit called Viva La Diva. Their opening track is This Beat Is Lezbotronik and it just gets better from there. Glorious.
ok… I’ll talk you through it.
*The Zutons – Remember Me (single): great scouse skiffle pop with attitude and a lovely tune
*Cass McCombs – A (album): really nice singer songwriter. will take home to listen to more
*Kingsbury Manx – Pelz Komet (Single): nice. like Juliana Hatfield Trio… but boys
*Rachel Goswell – Waves Are Universal (Album): Mojave3 girl goes solo. gorgeous. buy it
out 14th June on 4AD
*Youssou N’Dour – Egypt(album): lovely
*Chromeo – Me & My Man (single): cool hip hop with good mixes
*Mylo- Destroy Rock & Roll (album): Scotland’s answer to Royksopp. Gorgeous chilled beats, and
harder electro ones. ACE! another one to take home with me. buy it
*Cowboy Junkies – the stars of our stars (single): a but dull
*Brand New – The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows: it’s a video. it won’t play in my stereo.
*The A.M. – Utopia (single): not the Scissor Sisters. horrid; even if they did play with Jeff
Buckley.
*Gomez – Split The Difference (album): purty gooood. buy it?
